Comparative analysis of 2V, 2F, DV and 4N surface finish methods

2V – cold-rolled steel sheets
Cold-rolling is the most frequently used method of stainless steel surface finishing. Surface structure is formed by cold rolling, etching and light rolling on a skin rolling mill. In this case smooth flat areas, surrounded by slightly etched grain boundaries, occur. The surface is bright, but with low reflection precision. Average value of the Ra surface roughness is from 0.1 to 1.0 mcm depending on sheet thickness.

2F – rolled, dull polished steel sheets
This method provides duller surface. The method is becoming more and more popular, especially in the sphere of decorating of building faces and roofs. Surface finish is made by rolling metal in the skin rolling mill with specially roughed rolls. Dull surface is achieved by pressing of etched cold rolled metal. The value of the Ra surface roughness is from 0.5 to 0.9 mcm.

DV – dry brushed steel sheets
This method provides fine-grained and extrahigh steel. Such surface is achieved by processing of coils with multiple continuous rolling fine-grained brushes. In this case uniform hygienic surface without sharp fins is provided. The value of the surface roughness (Ra), measured across the direction of brush finish, is from 0.1 to 0.25 mcm.

4N – wet finished steel sheets
This method provides bright satin steel surface. For this type of finishing fine-grained abrasive strips are used. Oil cooling enables to use high pressure during finishing, due to uniform, edgy side surface is provided. 4N finished surfaces are easy to use. The have rather long life time when used in open air or general-purpose household devices. Ra typical value for thid type of surface finish is from 0.2 to 0.35 mcm.

Stainless steel handling

The right choice of the stainless steel grade plays very important role. If you have any doubts, don’t hesitate to ask us or other specialists. It is very important to be assure the steel grade chosen before setting down to work.

Try to avoid such designs or constructions, which enable dirt accumulation and are hard to clean.

You should use lifting clamps instead of carbon steel chain winches. Avoid metal grinding chips on the surface of stainless steel products.

It is not recommended to remove the protective film before the product maintenance. The film should be removed at the temperature from 0 to 30°S. (Figure 1)

Remove welds and oxidation tints with pickling liquid or pastes. Light finishing, using fine grain abrasive paper with 400 grit or less roughness, is also widely used. The right application of the shielding gas at the root side of a pipeline reduces the necessity of further weld finishing (Figure 2)

Remove cement or concrete splashed and wash the surface immediately. Corrosion, accumulated in small scratches, can be removed with warm nitric acid solution (10..15% HNO3) with further immediate surface washing and drying. Avoid contact of the nitric acid with other metals and follow safety rules.

Aggressive acid and chloride-containing cleaning agents are dangerous for stainless steel. Avoid contact with such agents when cleaning surfaces, related to stainless steel elements (e.g. windows).

Slightly alkaline cleaning agents (rN 9..11) are suitable for stainless steel cleaning. The main steps are washing and drying. Do not use high abrasive and iron-containing brushes, sponges, etc., which can scratch or somehow damage the metal surface.

Proper and regular cleaning assures long life time of the elements. It is recommended to clean ladder grabs and steps of the swimming pools, placed over or near the water surface, every day. Building construction elements, that don’t have natural rainwater cleaning, should be cleaned once or twice a year.
